The Communication degree at Jamestown Community College prepares you to transfer to four-year institutions to continue study in human communication, public relations, communication management, broadcast journalism, intercultural communication, or other branches of communication. You’ll create and edit media and non-media content, speak in front of diverse audiences, and navigate an increasingly global workforce. Graduates with communication degrees are in a variety of career fields, including TV and radio broadcasting, public relations, media production, journalism, digital writing, and corporate communication.

bc体育足球’s Communication program believes in a hands-on approach, offering a broad liberal arts curriculum that prepares you for transfer with a career-ready portfolio. You will master foundational communication skills like public speaking, media and professional writing, rhetorical analysis, and critical thinking. You will also take electives to explore areas of communication and media production that match your interests and career objectives.

You’ll have internship opportunities to get real-world experience. Students have completed internships in advertising, archiving and museum curation, event planning, journalism, public relations, radio broadcasting, social media marketing, videography, and web content development.

Communication skills

After you complete the program, you will be able to:

  • Distinguish between effective communication and ineffective communication.
  • Demonstrate understanding of basic and more complex theories of communication.
  • Analyze ineffective communication, identify communication problems, and suggest solutions to those communication problems.
  • Conduct an audience analysis to determine demographic and psychographic variables.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform basic research and organize their findings into a coherent, original written, oral or media presentation.
